  • Welcome to the Foundation Course on Non-Communicable Diseases Prevention and Control conducted by the Directorate of Non-Communicable Diseases of the Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka. By completing this course, you will gain knowledge and understanding on NCDs, its impact on the population and individuals, the health system organisation in Sri Lanka around NCD care, principles behind care planning and management related to common NCDs, as well as other selected topics related to NCDs.   • Module 1: Introduction and Overview


    This module will introduce you to the health system of Sri Lanka and its organization around NCDs. This will provide the foundation for the rest of the programme.

  • Module 2: Prevention and Screening for NCDs in Sri Lanka


    In this module, you will learn about prevention and levels of prevention in relation to NCDs and the current NCD screening programme implemented in Sri Lanka. 

  • Module 3.1: Addressing Risk Factors of NCDs (REPLACE, SHAKE)


    In this module, you will learn the impact of salt and trans-fats on the health and wellbeing of the population and methods that may be utilised in addressing these risk factors in the Sri Lankan context.

  • Module 3.2: Addressing Risk Factors of NCDs (MPOWER, SAFER AND ACTIVE)


    By completing this module, you will be able to learn how to address the risks posed by tobacco, alcohol and sedentary lifestyle on the manifestation and maintenance of NCDs.

  • Module 4: Promoting healthy lifestyles to prevent NCDs


    In tackling NCDs, promoting healthy lifestyles is an important aspect of care. In this module, you will learn the basics of healthy lifestyle counselling and its application in the Sri Lankan context.

  • Module 5: Risk Assessment and Evidence Based Management


    This module will discuss the cardiovascular disease risk assessment and evidence based management of NCDs.

  • Module 6: Access to Essential Medicines for NCDs


    Ensuring access to essential medicines is one of the key approaches in preventing NCD associated morbidity and mortality. Therefore, in this module, you will learn how to ensure access to essential medicines particularly for the most vulnerable populations.

  • Module 7: Systems for Monitoring NCD Prevention and Control in Sri Lanka


    In this module, you will be able to learn about systematic monitoring of programmes implemented around NCDs.

  • Module 8: Palliative Care for NCDs


    WHO has recognized palliative care as part of the comprehensive services required for the management of NCDs. This module will discuss the core principles around palliative care and its application in the Sri Lankan context.

  • Module 9: NCD Care in Emergency Preparedness and Response


    Emergency and disaster situation can derail NCD prevention and control efforts. Therefore, this module will focus on how to respond effectively during an emergency or disaster situation to prevent an escalation of NCD burden.

  • Course Wrap-Up


    If you have completed all the activities within each module, you will be able to generate a 'Certificate of Achievement' using this section. 

    Following criteria must be fulfilled to obtain the certificate:

    1. Complete all activities marked as 'essential activities' in the course
    2. Complete all quizzes and achieve the indicated pass mark.
    3. Spend a pre-determined time online completing the course as defined by the course managers of the Directorate of Non-Communicable Diseases.
